I went to the Ramsey County Sheriff's office today to renew my permit. I was surprised and delighted to see the transaction windows to the right of Checkpoint Bobby (staffed by two exceptionally sloven private guard service types). Five years ago I had to go upstairs and there was just an open counter, not a security window through which to do the transaction.
I had pre-assembled everything I was told to provide by the materials from the Ramsey County Sheriff's office:
Copy of my Driver's License; Copy of my certificate; Completed application; Completed authorization for background check; Original certificate; Actual Driver's License.
The young lady behind the counter was cheerful as she took all of the items. She then asked for my permit so that she could copy it. I asked directly if that was a requirement because if it was I must have missed it. She replied that no one normally has a copy, which is why they copy it themselves. That did not answer my question.
She then said that they would only accept the exact amount of the fee, and that they would not make change. That complicated things since I had proffered four $20 bills. We finally sorted it out and she double-checked the application.
Then she issued me my cash and renewal receipts and stated "The Sheriff has 30 days to issue the permit." With that she turned and walked away.
I suspect the 30 day reference was a statement of fact: It will take 30 days to renew my permit.
I will post in the "Turnaround" forum exactly how long it will take.

Pretty typical minimal runaround from Ramsey -- they asked for only three things that the law says they can't ask for, did the usual I don't make change for your kind, or accept checks from trash like you, gave a nonresponsive answer to a peon's question, but that's all I can see.

Twenty days so far and counting.
Imagine that, and I didn't take my renewal class from Joel! (Inside joke.)
I suspect that they will indeed take all of 30 days to issue my renewal.

So, am I the only one in history that got his permit issued by Ramsey County in a timely fashion? Back when I first applied in 2004 I turned in my paperwork on a Thursday morning and had my permit in the mail the following Monday. I remember being surprised because I had heard all sorts of horror stories about dealing with Fletcher. It took longer for me to get my permit to purchase from Roseville PD in 2003 (two weeks) than it took to get my carry permit the next year.

Twenty four days and counting.
Ah, er, um, well … could he be applying the "30 business days" rule here?
Just thinking …

I believe the law is 30 calendar days, not business days.

Yup. But they could still be pulling it out of their asses applying their own misunderstanding, rather than following the law.

No, Sheriff Fletcher and his staff would never stoop so... Jeez, I couldn't even finish typing it before I started choking too hard to finish.
