"We don't want to take their guns away, we want them registered, we don't want them crossing state lines..."

It's not that I don't trust Pelosi. What she promises has no relevance. The guarantee I need is that no one, ever, in any possible future, will ever attempt to use the registry to restrict civilian gun ownership in any way.
It's a guarantee she can't make.
Remember - Hitler didn't pass his own gun control laws. The laws that created the registry that he used to disarm his political opponents were passed by the Weimar Republic. I'm certain that the Weimar legislators who voted for that law had no intention for it to be used in the way it was, or any expectation that it would be so used.
It doesn't matter what the legislators intend a law to be used, or how they expect it to be used. Because ten or twenty or thirty years down the road, they'll be ex-legislators, and someone else will be enforcing the laws they created.
If Pelosi wants firearms registration, all she need do is to convince me that there will never, ever, be anyone in a position of authority who might attempt to use the registry in a way to restrict gun ownership.
When she does, I'll be willing to listen to arguments on the benefits of registration on the merits. But until then, it's a closed subject.

3:57, though you'll have to back it up a few seconds. . . the freudian slip - "A draconian drug/ gun law. . . " was cute. I like that she said it was a civil rights issue, but I don't think she has the issue clear in her head.
