Albemarle County Police have released dashboard video they say proves an officer was not at fault for hitting a pedestrian.
53-year-old Jerry Mitchell was crossing Main Street in Charlottesville in a wheelchair when he was hit by an Albemarle County Police car.
Mitchell was initially charged by Charlottesville Police in the case for illegally crossing the street. Those charges were later dropped.
On Monday, Albemarle County police released video from the dashboard of officer Greg Davis. The video shows Davis making a left turn onto Main Street when the light turned green. It shows his vehicle hit Mitchell's wheelchair, throwing Mitchell from the chair. Davis and another bystander quickly went to assist Mitchell. The video does show the crosswalk signal was red.
In a statement, Albemarle County Police Chief John Miller said, "We feel the video supports the Charlottesville Police Department and the Charlottesville Commonwealth Attorney in their decision not to prosecute any traffic charges in this incident. This was a very unfortunate accident. We regret any situation involving one of our officers where a citizen is injured, and we are sorry that Mr. Mitchell was injured in the incident."
At least (very, very least at best) they decided to drop the charges, but notice their knee-jerk reaction to the incident?

Interesting. So is it their theory that if, say, a kid goes out in the street, and somebody runs over the kid, the driver isn't at at fault even if he should have seen the kid and stopped? Or is that only for Special People?

I don't see any proof here of the officer not being at fault. All I see is the squad car hitting the wheelchair man.

LOL! That's horseshit. How could anyone take that charge seriously?

Well, the NYPD did charge Abner Louima with unlawful sexual congress with a plunger.
(No, not really. The original story was that it was an "accident.")

Wow Joel you have a terrific memory for this horrendous stuff. The Abner Louima case was one of the worst cases of police brutality on anyone I can remember hearing about. People do get arrested and charged with crimes in an effort to cover up crimes committed by their arrestors.

LOL! That's horseshit. How could anyone take that charge seriously? Peds always have the right of way!!! The cop should be cited for failing to yield to a ped.

Usually, if the light is green, that is when pedestrians cross in the same direction as the green. The left turning (police) vehicle should be aware of pedestrians that it may be crossing. That they even for a moment charged the wheelchair with anything is an abuse.
