I guess one shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but on the free wifi during a layover in Charlotte I see tried to check the forum only to see it's blocked by "SonicWALL Content Filter Service" For "Forbidden Category: WEAPONS".

I never seem to have these problems. Of course, I use ssh to tunnel to my machine at home.

Yeah, ssh -D is a SOCKS v5 proxy tunneling through ssh.
