Luckily, it appears that guards apprehended him before he took out any bystanders, with the lack of victim identification in the article.

Apparently an "elderly white supremacist", according to the BBC:

He used a RIFLE (increasing his kill potential enormously).

D. C.'s recently re-enacted HANDGUN ban worked perfectly.

Past conviction for attempted kidnapping? Wouldn't that be a felony? Wouldn't that preclude him from owning guns?

Sounds like there's a whole bunch of FAIL here, starting with the mental midget of a shooter himself. Coward.

ETA - Why coward? Because there's nothing brave about shooting at innocent people in a museum.

You do know that almost every building in DC has a metal detector at the entrance, right?

He's an active LEO. Granted, that won't help him at a lot of places, but it does let him carry in general.

While it has been several years since I was in DC, the only place I remember having metal detectors were the Mint and the Capital bldg.

Edit, we did not go to the WH.

I was there in 2007 for my honeymoon.

Add National Archives and some of the Smithsonian to the list.

As well you should. I'll grump that I couldn't -- and, frankly, expect you would share my grumping. You shouldn't disarm yourself just because the idiot laws require most of us to.

Most of the major facilities there have metal detectors now -- certainly the White House, Capital, National Archives, and most major museums, etc.

Obviously none of the outdoor stuff (Arlington, National Mall, Lincoln Monument, etc) have metal detectors :)

I am unsure of the legalities of a LEO carrying at Arlington since that is an Army facility

DC is one of the few towns in the country where I rarely feel safe.

Yeah, those work wonders. You ever see The Matrix? :D
*(Honestly, that was the image that came to mind when I first read this story of a guy shooting it out in DC with security guards!)

Security Guard (at the entrance to Morpheus' Building) wrote:
Please remove any metallic objects you may be carrying: keys, loose change... HOLY #@$%!!
:D :D :D

*Lightheartedness aside, my many sympathies go out to those involved, especially the fallen guard and his brave colleagues. Thanks to them (and their arms and bravery) no futher innocent lives were lost that day.
