I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but I have read conflicting comments on a (non firearm) political forum regarding carry (presumably OC) of long guns. I found this statute:

«624.7181 RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS IN PUBLIC PLACES.
Subdivision 1.Definitions.
For purposes of this section, the following terms have the meanings given
them.

(a) "BB gun" means a device that fires or ejects a shot measuring .18 of an
inch or less in diameter.

(b) "Carry" does not include:

(1) the carrying of a BB gun, rifle, or shotgun to, from, or at a place
where firearms are repaired, bought, sold, traded, or displayed, or where
hunting, target shooting, or other lawful activity involving firearms
occurs, or at funerals, parades, or other lawful ceremonies;

(2) the carrying by a person of a BB gun, rifle, or shotgun that is unloaded
and in a gun case expressly made to contain a firearm, if the case fully
encloses the firearm by being zipped, snapped, buckled, tied, or otherwise
fastened, and no portion of the firearm is exposed;

(3) the carrying of a BB gun, rifle, or shotgun by a person who has a permit
under section 624.714; »

Is long gun carry allowed with a permit or not?

Sure. Just like open carry is allowed in Wisconsin. Sorta.

Yup, it is legal. You can march through downtown with an AR-15 in your hands, if you'd like.

Now that said, you're going to make a lot of new friends who drive black and white cars with cool flashing lights.

Of course, if there were a large number of us, they might be a bit more circumspect...

Remember, SCOTUS says laws against armed assembly do not violate the 2nd Amendment.

Context is everything.

Minnesota has a "militia" law that is broad enough to apply to an armed group with any trappings of militaria:

M.S. 624.61 It shall not be lawful for any body of persons, other than the National Guard, troops of the United States and, with the consent of the governor, sons and daughters of veterans and cadets of educational institutions where military science is taught, to associate themselves together as a military company with arms


Carrying a long gun in some contexts, (say, down Nicollett Mall) might be seen as boisterous conduct tending to arouse alarm in others. Certainly 609.72 has been stretched farther in other situations:

609.72 DISORDERLY CONDUCT.
Subdivision 1.Crime.

Whoever does any of the following in a public or private place, including on a school bus, knowing, or having reasonable grounds to know that it will, or will tend to, alarm, anger or disturb others or provoke an assault or breach of the peace, is guilty of disorderly conduct, which is a misdemeanor:

(1) engages in brawling or fighting; or

(2) disturbs an assembly or meeting, not unlawful in its character; or

(3) engages in offensive, obscene, abusive, boisterous, or noisy conduct or in offensive, obscene, or abusive language tending reasonably to arouse alarm, anger, or resentment in others.

[...]


One might also run afoul of the DNR regulation prohibiting uncased guns within 25 yards of a vehicle.

I'm offended, alarmed, and angered by 609.72(3), which violates my freedom of speech, and any attorney should know that there will be people so offended, alarmed, and angered. Therefore, the State Legislature is in violation of 609.72(3). :bang:

So what would happen? If you got a permit, they'd have to set you free right?

Thanks for the responses! I don't plan on carrying a long gun, but was curious due to the debate on the political forum. (I stay away from such forums. My brother frequents several "Republican" forums but he's retired and time to spend).

Who's assembling? I just happen to have found myself in the same place as a like-minded person. Pure happenstance.

Anything involving long-gun carry we'd want to start further out. Minneapolis would probably be NOT the place to set 'precedent' for ensuring that little line stays in.

You'd have to obtain a permit ahead of time.
