Neither is blood running in the streets, nor has crime tumbled to nill, but the mountain of paperwork has exploded due to the MPPA. Who knew?

David Codrea has an <a href=http://waronguns.blogspot.com/2008/11/solution-to-too-much-paperwork.html target=new>interesting idea</a>

So we can stop with the forms and fees and dispense with this permission nonsense, right?

Now that it's been proven (yet once again) the Dodge City scenario is a lie, we know peaceable armed citizens don't need supervising. And those who aren't peaceable don't get permits anyway.

As for crime not being deterred, I don't see where the data sets they're citing would show that one way or another. But here's what we do know: we don't need to demonstrate how many fires are deterred by equipping buildings with extinguishers and sprinkler systems to know that they'll be in a better position to remain standing should one break out.

The reporter gets many things wrong, of course.

Every year in this country, 2.7% of people move out of state ( http://www.melissadata.com/enews/articles/0705b/1.htm ). Extend that over five years, and that's over 14% who may not renew because they don't live here any more. Some people die, and some people lose interest.

For July, August and September, renewals and new permits didn't keep up with expirations from the 2003 rush.

I expect that Obama's election will show a large surge on 11/30 and an even larger one on 12/31.

Just as the gun stores are seeing a surge in sales I am getting inquiries based on what they expect Obama to do.

Interesting. So a bunch of permit holders are forgetting to reapply.

I wonder what an ad campaign to remind citizens about it would do... You know, to keep law abiding citizens out of trouble. Promoting law and order, as it were.

My brother and sister-in-law haven't had the time to take a class for their renewal yet and their permits expired. I told him that he needs to make it a priority and get it done.

I guess that makes it a win if that story is the worst they can come up with.

Zero mention of Treptow, too, whew.

Although the dueling instructor stuff in the comments is irritating, even if some folks I approve of have come in for nice ones. Looks bad.

I like the "BY THE NUMBERS" part at the end... what does any of that have to do with permit holders?

It would be like doing a article on people with a Commercial Drivers Liscense, and then putting in stats about all auto accidents, etc.

Ouch. I usually don't even bother reading those.

Jumpin Jupiter, I’ll never get that 5 min read time back…..More tripe

Shocking news; stop the presses.
Quote:
A large share of the increase in gun assaults has occurred in the metro area, with Hennepin County — and specifically Minneapolis — being a hotspot. A disproportionate number involve males ages 15 to 29.

No correlation to the above.
Quote:
ASSAULTS UP
State Bureau of Criminal Apprehension data on aggravated assaults involving guns showed increases as well. They numbered 1,240 incidents in 2000; grew to 1,316 in 2003; and rose to 1,477 in 2007. Patient discharge data show a similar trend, with assaults involving firearms accounting for 158 hospitalizations in 2000; 278 in 2003; and 395 in 2006.

Of course those injured had prior training and the evil gun turned on them. (Note to author: Motorcycle accidents are also on the rise. Maybe due to more inexperienced motorcyclists?)
Quote:
ACCIDENTAL INJURY UP
Unintentional injuries involving firearms showed a stronger upward trend. They numbered 279 in 2000; 340 in 2003; and 402 in 2006, according to patient discharge data from the Minnesota Department of Health.

No other mitigating factors ?
Quote:
SUICIDES MIXED
The CDC reported 223 suicides by firearm in Minnesota in 2000; 244 in 2003; and 255 in 2005.

I don't trust the print media much, anymore, so I never discount stories like this.

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I read this story as "preparing the battlefield" for a run at "modifying" MCPPA.

Sure it is. Getting media coverage is sort of basic to promoting any public project. Most coverage is instigated by somebody who cares; it's not the reporter's idea. Somebody needs to create "news", so people will pay attention.

There are two ways to do it. Stage a media event and invite the media (ie a "die in" on the Capitol steps, or simply a "lecture"). The sudience is for show only, but because it is an "event", the media will cover it, if you play it right. And keep doing it over and over.

Or, contact a friendly reporter, and suggest a story, but have everything basically ready for them. Introduce them to the people to interview and have the photo ops all set. If you're good at creating news, the AP will pick it up. Amd you'll get Joyce money for being a good "Community Organizer", like Heather does.

This is how Barack won the endorsement, and the election. He was the best "organizer". (He bragged about it, and the right tried to make "community organizer" a bad word by using the exact same tactics themselves. That worked too.)

The whole Brady strategey is based on having a network of good community organizers, who can get timely publicity, and make it look like the work of local or national media.

But Al is COMPLETELY CORRECT about the current media coverage about guns. It's a precurser to what's going to be proposed, IMHO.

Editorial: Are gun owners worried?

It seems as if Olmsted County residents are a bit more fond of their handguns and "right-to-carry" privileges than are people who live in the metro area.

In the Twin Cities, only half of those who applied for and received carry permits five years ago have applied for a renewal of their certifications. Dakota County Sheriff's Chief Deputy David Bellows says many permit-holders are having second thoughts because a concealed weapon is heavy and uncomfortable. It's also possible that the $75 renewal fee is giving some people pause.

That's not the case here. Sheriff Steven VonWald says 80 percent of people who got their permits five years ago have applied for a renewal, and lots of other people are coming in to get their permit to carry, or simply to get the background check to be able to purchase a handgun.

"There's this rumor going around that the new president is going to somehow 'gong' permits to carry and permits to purchase, and so we're just getting hammered," he said. "It's crazy."

Frankly, we hope president-elect Obama has much bigger issues on his mind.
